My teaching job encompasses many others. This week, I've: * Listened to a father discuss his separation from his wife and worry about how it might be affecting his son's performance in school (that's why I asked you to come talk to me, mister! Of course it's affecting him!). * Heard a confession of stealing from a child who I already knew had done it. But he, with some help from another adult I'd talked to, came to me first and apologized, explained some difficulties at home, and tried bravely not to cry. * Received a call from a grandmother concerned about her granddaughter's fear about the TAKS test. She asked what she could be doing to help. I appreciated her concern, but on the Friday before, all I could suggest was sleep and soothing words! * Tried numerous times to diffuse a student's explosive anger before he hurt someone. I eventually had to write him up, but I made it days before he forced my hand! Counselor, priest, therapist, coach...craziness! |
